Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund celebrates re-election of women’s health ally Representative Mike Day

Representative Day’s victory over reproductive rights opponent affirms voters’ support of smart sexual and reproductive health policies

BOSTON – The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) celebrates State Representative Mike Day’s re-election to the 31st Middlesex district seat of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. Representative Day’s re-election is a victory for women, men and young people who benefit from greater access to health care.

“Representative Day has a strong record of putting patients first, strengthening reproductive rights, and working to remove barriers to health care,” said Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, president of PPAF. “His victory over a vocal opponent of Planned Parenthood’s work makes it clear voters are committed to protecting sexual and reproductive health care and greater health equity for all.”

During his first term, Representative Day not only opposed all attempts to limit access to safe, legal abortion, he co-sponsored legislation to benefit women’s health, including a bill to establish greater protections for patients’ confidentiality and a bill that would require insurers to cover, with no cost-sharing, all FDA-approved contraceptive methods. He also co-sponsored legislation to expand access to medically accurate, age-appropriate, and comprehensive sexuality education in public schools and voted to protect vital state funding for family planning services.

In the weeks leading up to today’s election, PPAF ran a volunteer-driven voter education program through grassroots efforts and digital campaigns to inform voters about where the candidates stand and turn out voters across the state.

Representative Day’s victory, along with the success of several other supporters of reproductive rights tonight, reinforces recent polling that found 79 percent of Massachusetts voters said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who believes decisions about abortion should be left to a woman, in consultation with her doctor, while 83 percent said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who wants to ban safe, legal abortion.

“In this national political climate, we need bold sexual and reproductive health allies like Representative Day to further establish Massachusetts’s role as a national leader in health care and equal rights,” said Childs-Roshak. “Representative Day has been committed to improving access to sexual and reproductive health since his first day in office. With his ongoing support, lawmakers have an opportunity to expand access and eliminate barriers to vital health care and preventive services, and build healthier communities across the state.”
