Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund celebrates victory of women’s health allies on the Cape and Islands

Election of PPAF-endorsed candidates affirms Cape voters’ support of reproductive rights

BOSTON – The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) celebrates the election of endorsed state legislative candidates who will represent the strong pro-women’s health values of Cape and Islands residents on Beacon Hill.

PPAF endorsed state Senate candidate Julian Cyr and Massachusetts House of Representatives candidate Dylan Fernandes, for election. PPAF also endorsed State Representative Sarah Peake for re-election.

“PPAF staff and volunteers engaged voters across the Cape to educate them on candidates’ positions. The positive response we received and the support for sexual and reproductive health care were overwhelming,” said PPAF president Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak. “Voters want to make sure their lawmakers will put patients first, strengthen reproductive rights, and help keep their communities healthy.”

In the weeks leading up to today’s election, PPAF ran a volunteer-driven voter education program through grassroots efforts and digital campaigns to inform voters about where the candidates stand and turn out voters across the state.

Cyr and Fernandes both support PPAF’s legislative priorities, which are a series of smart sexual and reproductive health policies, including stronger patient confidentiality protections, expanded access to comprehensive sexuality education in public schools, fully funded family planning services, and equal access to safe, legal abortion. Representative Peake is a champion of sexual and reproductive health care, and boasts a strong voting record of supporting important legislation to improve the health of all communities.

The success of these candidates underscores recent polling that found 79 percent of Massachusetts voters said they would be more likely to vote for a candidate who believes decisions about abortion should be left to a woman, in consultation with her doctor, while 83 percent said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who wants to ban safe, legal abortion.

“In this national political climate, we need bold allies like those elected tonight to further solidify Massachusetts’s role as a national leader in health care and equal rights,” said Childs-Roshak. “Now, lawmakers have an opportunity to expand access to sexual and reproductive health care and comprehensive sexuality education, and remove barriers to health care for Massachusetts residents, no matter who they are or where they live.”
