Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund endorses State Representative Tim Toomey for Re-Election

Toomey is a long-time supporter of comprehensive sexuality education, family planning services

BOSTON – The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund (PPAF) has endorsed State Representative Timothy J. Toomey for re-election to the 26th Middlesex District seat of the Massachusetts House of Representatives. PPAF is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, and is working to elect dedicated sexual and reproductive health advocates like Representative Toomey to the Massachusetts legislature.

“As a member of the Cambridge School Committee, City Council, and the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Representative Toomey has prioritized the health of his district by advocating for comprehensive sexuality education, accessible contraception, and family planning services. His commitment to expanding educational resources and access to preventive care is essential for improving sexual and reproductive health in Cambridge and in communities across the Commonwealth,” Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, PPAF President, said.

Representative Toomey has represented the 26th Middlesex District, which encompasses parts of Cambridge and Somerville, since 1993. The Democratic primary election is September 8.

“Over the course of his more than two decades in office, Representative Toomey has been a leader when it comes to comprehensive sexuality education and has a long record of supporting policies that are intrinsic to our mission to protect and promote sexual and reproductive health,” Childs-Roshak said.

Supreme Court Strikes Down Texas Abortion Restrictions

Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts reacts to landmark ruling

Boston – Today, the Supreme Court of the United States in a landmark ruling protected access to safe, legal abortion by blocking two unconstitutional Texas restrictions that threatened to close all but nine health centers in the entire state that could provide abortion for the 5.4 million Texas women of reproductive age — down from approximately 40 health centers before passage of this dangerous law. As the Court recognized, “neither of these provisions offers medical benefits sufficient to justify the burdens upon access that each imposes.”

In response, Planned Parenthood has vowed to redouble its efforts to fight restrictions on safe, legal abortion across the country. Since 2011, state lawmakers have passed more than 316 restrictions on safe, legal abortion, and have introduced 442 in the first six months of 2016 alone, according to Guttmacher. In Massachusetts, sexual and reproductive health advocates have worked tirelessly to expand access to sexual and reproductive health while blocking routine attempts by a vocal minority to introduce medically unnecessary restrictions to safe, legal abortion

Statement from Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts.

“Today is a great day. The Supreme Court made it clear that politicians cannot pass laws designed to block access to safe, legal abortion. Still, today’s victory does not undo the past five years of damage and restrictions already written into law in Texas and many states across the country. No woman or doctor should be punished for receiving or providing high quality, safe and appropriate medical care. We will continue to protect access to safe, legal abortion on behalf of our patients in Massachusetts and will stand in solidarity with women nationwide. We will not go back.”

Statement from Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

This landmark ruling is an enormous victory for women. We are thrilled the Court recognized that these laws do not enhance patient safety -- rather, they punish women by blocking access to safe abortion. Yet far too many women still face insurmountable barriers, which is why we are taking this fight state by state. It’s time to pass state laws to protect a woman’s constitutional right to abortion, and repeal ones that block it. A person’s right to make their own decisions about abortion shouldn’t depend on who they are or where they live. ”

Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund endorses Nora Harrington for State Senate

Harrington is a Strong Champion against Planned Parenthood Opponent Timility

BOSTON – The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund (PPAF) has endorsed Nora Harrington to represent the Norfolk, Bristol, and Plymouth District in the Massachusetts Senate.  PPAF is the advocacy and political arm of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts, and is working to elect bold sexual and reproductive health champions like Harrington to the Massachusetts legislature.

“Nora Harrington has made clear she will protect a woman’s right to make her own sexual and reproductive health care decisions, eliminate barriers to health care faced by women, men, and young people, and champion equal rights for all. Massachusetts has a long history of leadership when it comes to health care and equality, and now more than ever, we need elected officials who will champion these values and push the Commonwealth back to the forefront of sexual and reproductive health advocacy. That’s why Planned Parenthood is proud to endorse Nora Harrington,” Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, PPAF President, said.

Keynote Speaker Senator Wendy Davis warns reproductive rights at stake in 2016

BOSTON— On February 25, more than 300 supporters of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund (PPAF) gathered at the Four Seasons for the annual Celebration of Choices gala. Featuring keynote remarks from Texas Senator Wendy Davis, the event raised over $400,000 for PPAF’s legislative, grassroots organizing and electoral advocacy work.  The event also recognized Boston City Councilor At-Large, Ayanna Pressley, and her work on behalf of women and girls.

The event was Co-Chaired by Patti and Jonathan Kraft of Chestnut Hill and Andrea and Brian Edlow of Newton.

“Tonight’s success is testimony to the strong support that the Advocacy Fund enjoys in Massachusetts and the widely supported goal to make Massachusetts a national leader in sexual and reproductive health.” said Dr. Jennifer Childs-Roshak, President of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts.  “Given that Planned Parenthood health centers and their patients have been shoved into the electoral spotlight, it is impossible for us to stay on the sidelines.  My twenty years of experience as a family physician allowed me to see firsthand what happens when people don’t have access to the care they need:  bad health outcomes and exacerbated health care disparities.  That’s why we are pushing back against efforts to restrict health care access and championing an agenda aimed at advancing reproductive rights, expanding access to sexual and reproductive health care and making comprehensive sexuality education the norm.”

Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund applauds Senate’s Passage of the Healthy Youth Act

Advocates urge swift action by the House

BOSTON— The Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts (PPAF) applauds the Massachusetts Senate’s passage of An Act Relative to Healthy Youth, a bill that would ensure that a Massachusetts public school electing to teach sexuality education selects an appropriate curriculum that’s medically accurate, age-appropriate, and truly comprehensive.

Nearly 40% of high school students in Massachusetts have had sexual intercourse and nearly one in ten students reported four or more partners in their lives (i).  Research shows that when young people are provided accurate information, acquire important communication skills and can access resources to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, they are better equipped to make safe decisions and form healthy relationships.  Evidence-based comprehensive sexuality education, which includes all those elements, helps students delay sexual activity and reduces their risk for unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infection (STIs).

“The Healthy Youth Act is about keeping young people healthy and safeguarding them from the dangers of inadequate or misleading sexuality education,” said Tricia Wajda, PPAF Director of Public Affairs. “This is the kind of public health policy that will help communities keep their students in school and combat issues like sexual assault at its roots.  We applaud the Senate for prioritizing the health of Massachusetts’ young people by passing the Healthy Youth Act and call on the House to follow suit and pass this legislation.”
