Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts Applauds Sen. Warren and Sen. Markey for Standing up for Women and Families

Sen. Warren and Sen. Markey vote to continue providing preventative care to millions of Planned Parenthood patients

Boston, MA - Today in the United States Senate, extremist politicians continued their attack on women’s health care by attempting to pass legislation to defund Planned Parenthood.  Both Senator Warren and Senator Markey voted against this dangerous legislation, ultimately helping to defeat it.

“We applaud Senator Warren and Senator Markey for standing up for women and families across Massachusetts who rely on Planned Parenthood for access to essential care like birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment and well-woman exams,” said Tricia Wajda, Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund’s Director of Public Affairs. “The Senate’s attempt to defund Planned Parenthood is part of a dangerous agenda led by extreme politicians to restrict access to preventive reproductive health care and to ban safe and legal abortion.  We thank Senator Warren and Senator Markey for voting against these cuts and fighting off these attacks on women’s health.”

A recent CNN/ORC poll found that 7 out of 10 Americans oppose shutting down the government in order to defund Planned Parenthood. Even the majority of those who labeled themselves as “Conservative” agree that it is more important to avoid a government shutdown than defund Planned Parenthood.

Congresswoman Clark and Winthrop community gather to show support for Planned Parenthood

WINTHROP – Tonight, Congresswoman Katherine Clark, the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund (PPAF), and community members gathered at the Winthrop Public Library to show their support for Planned Parenthood and for the millions of patients across the country who rely on Planned Parenthood’s health services.

Congresswoman Clark has long been an unwavering supporter of Planned Parenthood, fighting back against efforts to restrict access to reproductive health care and advocating for comprehensive sexuality education.  As a state senator, she was the lead sponsor of An Act Relative to Healthy Youth, a bill to expand access to comprehensive sexuality education in the state.

Congresswoman Clark delivered remarks at the event,

“For many women, Planned Parenthood health centers are their only source of health care,” said Congresswoman Clark. “The great news is we have strong advocates who, like the majority of Americans, know that Planned Parenthood provides critical services to women and families. We need to stand together and demand an end to backwards ideological efforts that allow the government to step between a woman and her doctor and family.”

Governor Baker should support Massachusetts women and families

Proposed budget supports critical family planning programming

BOSTON - Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund (PPAF) and the Massachusetts Family Planning Association (MFPA) commend House Speaker DeLeo, Senate President Rosenberg, leadership of the Ways and Means committees and the entire legislature for including $5.3 million for comprehensive family planning programming in the budget, and call on Governor Baker to approve the Legislature’s proposed funding level.

“With leadership on Capitol Hill taking steps to cut the  federal family planning program (Title X), the state’s investment in family planning funding for Massachusetts women and families is more important than ever,” said Tricia Wajda, PPAF’s Director of Public Affairs.  “As a candidate last fall, Governor Baker repeatedly expressed public support for women’s health issues.  By approving this vital family planning funding he can show the people of Massachusetts he is committed to making Massachusetts a leader in access to sexual and reproductive health care for everyone.”

Health Care Providers, Youth Activists, and Advocacy and Education Organizations Mobilize for Sexual Health

BOSTON - Activists from across Massachusetts gathered at the State House today to ask their elected officials to support legislation that will expand access to sexual and reproductive health care and education in Massachusetts.

Attorney General Maura Healey delivered keynote remarks, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing sexual health, saying “Access to sexual health care, comprehensive sexuality education and family planning services play an integral role in creating stronger, healthier communities. Despite the tremendous gains we have made in Massachusetts to increase access to high quality, affordable health care, our work is not done. Every person should have the right to make personal health care decisions without interference and we need to ensure that everyone is provided the care and information they need to stay healthy.”
